Comic SUblime

I had the idea that an artist's sublime was heightened even further by his subconscious going back over and over. This intellectual understanding of the sublime I connected to a Comic variety of the sublime. I liked the sound of it and I heard it then mentioned in a poem at St Marks and I looked it up. It seemed to have been in earlier criticism and I guess always a bit of an irony.

These were my most abstracted and comic paintings. Each aspect pushed as far as I could at the time.

They seemed an end to the Long Island subject I had felt ruined-- since my last summer in 1995 there.

The shapes could have been tragic beach balls. I never made the black and white ocean paintings though I meant to and probably still will.
